JEPS Hot Spring Inn and Dining Venue Guide
Hot spring inns with private dining rooms | Differences from in-room dining, prices, venues, and reservation confirmation
"Private dining" is not necessarily the same as dining in your hotel room. Before booking, confirm whether you want a completely private or semi-private room, whether it's for dinner or breakfast, and whether it's guaranteed or optional.

The Japan Tourism Agency's specification comparison document distinguishes between room service, private rooms, and restaurants as examples of dining locations in ryokans (Japanese inns). Even if a booking site displays "private room service," the structure is not the same; it could be a completely private room with walls and a door, a semi-private room with partitions, or a dining area for each group.

| Dining | General meaning | Pre-booking confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Private room meal | A private dining room separate from the guest rooms. | Doors/walls, exclusive use, movement |
| Room meal | Meals are delivered to the guest rooms. | Serving meals, entering the room, preparing bedding, and tidying up. |
| Semi-private room | Seats separated by partitions, etc. | Open top and entrance, sound |
| Food served at the venue | Common areas such as halls and restaurants | Seating arrangement, crowding, time |
| Leave the dining location to us. | On the day or when accommodation is decided | No guarantee of a private room. |

| Private rooms available upon request | Requests are accepted, but not guaranteed. | Answer, additional charges |
| Leave the dining location to us. | The accommodation decides the location. | If a private room is essential, I wouldn't choose this option. |
Simply writing "private room requested" in the reservation request section does not guarantee a private room. If a private room is a requirement for your trip, choose a plan that guarantees a private room, or get a response from the hotel before confirming your reservation.Points to note when booking a hot spring innwithEarly reservationPlease Confirm.
Dinner and breakfast should be viewed separately in terms of location, format, and time.
Some accommodations offer a combination of private dining rooms for dinner and a shared dining area or buffet for breakfast. Conversely, some offer the same private room for both breakfast and dinner, different private rooms, or in-room dining for dinner only, depending on the accommodation and plan. Please check which meals are included in the description of "two meals included, private room dining."

Check the structure, quietness, and service methods of the private room.
Even in completely private rooms, soundproofing is not guaranteed. Voices and footsteps may be audible depending on the type of door (fusuma, sliding doors, open tops, distance from the corridor). Please inform us of your purpose, such as anniversaries, conversations, or bringing children, and confirm the necessary conditions.
The service intervals vary, with dishes being served one by one, all at once, and staff being called via a call button. It's not a space where staff are completely absent. There are time limits for meals, and cleanup begins after the meal is finished, so we don't recommend using the space for extended periods.

| Traveling alone | Private rooms and semi-private rooms for one person | Minimum number of people, additional charges |
| Large group / Multiple rooms | Group room | Capacity, seating arrangement, differences in dishes |
Private dining rooms aren't always the best option for everyone. Those who prefer the freedom to move around the food stations might prefer a buffet, while those who want to minimize movement even if staff enter their rooms for serving might prefer in-room dining. And those who want to eat quickly might prefer dining in a main dining hall. First, decide on your travel purpose and requirements.

Compare prices not only by specifying a private room, but also by comparing rooms, meals, and the number of people.
The private dining plan is combined with room grade, meal course, beverages, private bath, etc., and the difference in price is not necessarily entirely due to the private room charge. We compare the total payment amount for the same stay dates, number of people, room, meals, dining location, and cancellation policy.

Calculate check-in and transportation times backward from meal times.
The Japan Tourism Agency's Q&A for Ryokans (Japanese inns) states that there are designated meal times, and meals may not be served if you arrive after those times. Since there are also reserved private rooms, late arrivals may not be able to use them. Calculate backwards from the start of dinner service, the final serving time, check-in, and the journey from the station to the inn.
In case of delays, we will contact the hotel's official contact number as well as the booking site's messaging system. Arrival conditions are:Check-in at the inn, pick-up and drop-offHotel pick-up/drop-offArrangements on the dayLast-minute/same-day bookingMake sure.
Children and the elderly should observe the flow of movement from the room to their private room.
While private dining rooms offer the advantage of less distraction from others, they may be located in a separate building or on a different floor from the guest rooms. Check the access to elevators, stairs, steps, corridors, shoe changes, seating arrangements (tatami or chairs), and toilets.
I will also ask the hotel about things like high chairs, stroller parking, warming up baby food, hot water for formula, diaper changes, and what to do if the baby falls asleep.Hot spring inns for families with children,Hot spring trip with a baby,Hot spring inns to visit with elderly peoplePlease refer to.
Even in private rooms, the risk of food allergen contamination is checked separately.
Private rooms are a system that separates the eating area, but they do not mean separating the kitchen, cooking utensils, oil, broth, or serving route. The Consumer Affairs Agency is urging caution regarding unintentional cross-contamination of food in restaurants and prepared meals, and is promoting information sharing between businesses and consumers.
Please inform us of the allergen, symptoms, whether trace amounts are acceptable, seasonings/broths, shared utensils, and emergency procedures before booking. Do not rely solely on a short "allergy-friendly" indication; also confirm what the accommodation cannot accommodate.
Allergy accommodations at hot spring innsWe will confirm how to communicate this and record the meal requirements for everyone, including children, in the reservation record.
Drinks, outside food and drinks, and additional orders are subject to the facility's rules, even in private rooms.
Just because you're dining in a private room doesn't mean you can freely bring in your own food and drinks. Please check in advance about any charges for bringing in beverages, special occasion cakes, baby food, water for taking medication, refrigeration/freezing, and the availability of tableware and knives. Raw foods and homemade foods may not be accepted for hygiene reasons.
There is a final deadline for additional food and drink orders. If you wish to order local sake, soft drinks, children's meals, desserts, or anniversary plates, please check the price, serving time, and cancellation deadline. We do not assume that beverages are included in the private room charge.
Bringing items into a hot spring innwithThe refrigerator in the innNext, we'll review the rules for the guest rooms and the dining area separately.
For groups of multiple people, three generations, or more, please confirm whether everyone can fit into one room.
Even if you book two or more rooms, dining arrangements may not automatically be combined into a single private room. Please inform the hotel of the private room capacity, number of tables, seating arrangement (tatami or chairs), number of people including children, and linking of separate reservation numbers. Please also confirm that everyone in your group, not just the representative, has the same meal plan.
Reservations with different meal courses or start times may not be able to be seated together. Even if the reservations are made through different booking sites or agencies, we will ask the hotel to confirm whether they recognize them as part of the same group. We will also confirm whether requests regarding seating arrangements, wheelchair access, high chairs, birthday seats, etc., are guaranteed or treated as requests only.
If the number of guests decreases or increases on the day of arrival, the room capacity, meal preparation, private room capacity, and cancellation fees may change. We will contact the booking agent and the hotel as soon as we become aware of any changes.
Please adhere to the rules of the private room regarding taking photos, talking, and calling staff.
Even in private rooms, when photographing food or companions, please ensure that staff and other guests in adjacent rooms are not visible in the shot. Video recording, lighting equipment, extended filming, live streaming, and commercial use may require facility permission. Being in a private room does not mean you can speak loudly or play music freely.
The methods for ordering additional meals or calling for service vary from inn to inn, including call buttons, telephones, and regular staff visits. First, confirm the end of your meal, your final drink order, and your departure time. If you don't anticipate staff coming, avoid entering the kitchen or other private rooms.
Please confirm three times: after booking, upon arrival, and before your meal.
- After booking:Save the plan name, private room guarantee, dinner/breakfast, number of people, and price.
- Upon arrival:Please confirm the dining venue, start time, transportation method, and dietary restrictions.
- Before meals:I checked to make sure the room I was assigned and the meal conditions matched what I had been told.
If there are any misunderstandings, please consult with the staff before the meal begins. Changes may not always be possible on the day of the reservation. If a private room is a required condition and cannot be provided due to the hotel's circumstances, please check the reservation conditions and the hotel's information regarding how they will handle such situations.

FAQ about hot spring inns with private dining rooms
What is the difference between dining in a private room and dining in your room?
Private dining often takes place in a separate dining area from the guest room, while in-room dining involves having the food delivered to your room. However, the names of these options vary from hotel to hotel, so be sure to check the dining location and the layout of the private room.
If I choose the private dining plan, will I definitely get a private room?
Plans explicitly stating "Private dining room guaranteed" are more likely to qualify, while those stating "Private dining room may be available," "Dining location at the hotel's discretion," or "Requests accepted" are not guaranteed. We will save your booking conditions and the hotel's response.
Are private dining rooms available for both dinner and breakfast?
Some accommodations offer private dining rooms for dinner, while breakfast is served in a shared dining area or buffet style. Be sure to check the location, format, and time for both dinner and breakfast separately.
Is there an extra charge for dining in a private room?
The cost may be included in the room and meal package price, or there may be an additional charge for requesting a private room. We will compare the total cost based on the same room, meal, number of people, and cancellation policy.
Can we use a private dining room even if we have children with us?
There are accommodations available. Please check the availability of high chairs, strollers, baby food, tableware, and what to do if your child falls asleep, as well as the distance from the room to the venue and whether there are any stairs.
If I have allergies, is it safer to have my meal in a private room?
Eating in a private room is separate from the risk of cross-contamination during cooking. Before booking, inform the accommodation of the potential food source, trace amounts of contamination, shared utensils, and the extent of possible countermeasures; do not assume safety simply because you are in a private room.
Can I choose a private dining room even if I'm traveling alone?
If a private dining room plan is available for one person, you can choose that. Please check the minimum number of people required for the private room, any additional charges, and the possibility of changing to a counter or semi-private room.
If I arrive late, will I be unable to use a private dining room?
If you arrive after the scheduled start and end times for meals, we may be unable to serve you, the number of dishes may change, or you may not be able to use a private room. Please contact the inn directly before you arrive late.
