About 1,300 years ago, during the reign of Emperor Kotoku, a hunter came across a white deer in the mountains, and when he chased after it, it suddenly disappeared and boiling water gushed out.
In the steam, a golden Buddha, the principal image of Shinano Kokubunji Temple, Yakushi Nyorai appeared and said, ``I want to make this a sacred hot spring that will save many people from their illnesses and help them live long lives.'' It is said to be the beginning.
