Whale watching

The whales you can see in Kerama are humpback whales. Humpback whales are mammals that grow to 13-15m in length and weigh about 30 tons. They are characterized by their large pectoral fins, which make up one-third of their body length.

Their tails are also large and the patterns on the undersides of the tails make it possible to identify individual whales. This pattern tells us that the same whales return every year.

Humpback whales come to the waters of Kerama to breed, and males put on a variety of dynamic performances as part of their courtship routine.

Whales rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe. They have nostrils on top of their heads, and they breathe by bringing them out of the water. This is called a blow. The blow, which turns into a white mist, can rise up to about 5 meters.

Humpback whales appear in the Kerama Islands from December to April, with peak season being from February to early March.
