Jomon cedar
"Jomon Cedar" is a gigantic Yakusugi cedar tree that is 25.3m tall and 16.4m around chest height. There are several theories about the origin of the name "Jomon Cedar," including one that says it comes from the fact that the tree was estimated to be over 4000 years old at the time and has been alive since the Jomon period, and another that says it comes from the resemblance of the freely undulating trunk to Jomon pottery.
It is said to be 7200 years old, but although scientific measurements have estimated its age up to 2170, the interior is hollow and accurate age measurement is not possible. The uneven surface and multiple bumps tell us that it has survived a harsh natural environment for many years. From the Edo period, when logging began in earnest, until the 40s, trees with many uneven surfaces and that were not vertical were considered worthless, so it seems that it has managed to escape logging and remain to this day. An observation deck was built in 1996 to protect the roots from the pressure of climbers.

Wilson's Stump
"Wilson Stump" is a huge Yakusugi stump that was felled 300 to 400 years ago. It is famous for being able to see the sky through a heart-shaped hole when you enter the cavity and look up. It was named "Wilson Stump" after it was introduced to the world by British botanist Dr. EH Wilson. It is estimated to be 2000 years old, 5m tall and 13.8m in circumference, and a spring bubbles up within the cavity.
There are three small cedars around the Wilson Stump, and you can see the stumps regenerating after they are cut down, as the next generation of Yakusugi trees grow using the stumps as nutrients. It is located on the way to the Jomon Cedar, so we recommend you enjoy both.
