Toshiki Swimming Pool

Toshiki Swimming Pool

Toshiki Swimming Area is located along the coast in the southern part of the island. The coast was formed by lava flows, and there are spots where seawater flows into it, making it a natural pool to enjoy in the summer.
The seawater around Oshima is very clear, and you can enjoy the beautiful ocean as if you were in a tropical resort. However, there is no sandy beach, and it is more like a hollow in the middle of a rugged rocky area, so please be careful not to cut or scrape your feet.

Mihara

Mihara

You can walk around the crater of Mt. Mihara, and you can walk around the crater like you would on Mt. Fuji. The walk takes about 50 minutes. The biggest attraction is the "Mt. Mihara Central Crater," where you can peer deep into the center of the caldera.
Occasionally, smoke can be seen rising, giving you the sense that Mt. Mihara is an active volcano.
The scenery changes even as you circle the crater, so you'll never get bored. If you see something you like, stop and enjoy the spectacular view that can only be found on a remote island's high ground.

Cross section of important strata

Cross section of important strata

The Senba Strata Cross Section is a cross section of the strata located along the road around the island on the southwest side of Izu Oshima. This cross section of the strata was revealed by the accumulation of volcanic ash and pumice from repeated eruptions over the past 1 years.
Although the area is undulating and appears to be folded at first glance, it is in fact a cross-section of the sediments that have accumulated covering the repeating ridges and valleys of the volcanic slope, cut at right angles to the slope gradient.
The 30 layers of the magnificent striped pattern, 800m high and 100m long, look just like a Baumkuchen! Parts of the road surface are said to date back between 1 and 5000 years ago.
It is a valuable spot that tells the history of Izu Oshima's eruptions. If you want to take photos, we recommend coming here on a sunny afternoon!

Hajikama Shrine

Hajikama Shrine

On both sides of the approach to the shrine, large cedar trees stand neatly in a straight line reaching up to the sky, and even in the dim light, soft sunlight filters through the gaps in the trees, creating an incredibly mysterious atmosphere along with the silence of the surrounding area.
Beyond the torii gate is an undulating 100m approach to the shrine, with moss growing all around like a green carpet. Large cedar trees stand on both sides of the approach, blocking out the sunlight, and the cool air and silence create a mystical atmosphere. At the end of the path is the shrine building surrounded by primeval forest, with deep streams running behind and on both sides of the building.

Back Desert

Back Desert

As its name suggests, the Ura Desert is a desert covered in black sand. Although it is not well known, it is the only desert in Japan that is labeled as a "desert" on maps published by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan. It is covered in volcanic ash and black pumice caused by repeated eruptions.
The Ura Desert is located at the foot of Mt. Mihara, and the surrounding area is a special protected area where vehicles are prohibited from entering.
The Ura Desert is an area of desolate black ground. You can see a mystical view of the deep blue ocean and the boundary of the sky. You can feel the overwhelming scale of the place, and it's hard to believe that you are in Japan. It's a spot you definitely want to visit if you go to Izu Oshima.
